What Are PRP and PRF?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, taps into your body’s natural regenerative abilities for dramatic skin rejuvenation and hair restoration results. But what is PRP? Your blood contains many components, including red and white cells, plasma, and platelets. Your platelets are rich in growth factors that promote healing and tissue regeneration. PRP has about five times the concentration of platelets naturally found in your blood, enhancing your skin and hair health.

PRF, or platelet-rich fibrin, is considered the next generation of PRP, with dramatic skin rejuvenation and hair restoration outcomes. Fibrin is a substance the platelets bind to when they circulate through the body. It releases growth factors that naturally trigger the body’s regenerative processes, boosts collagen and elastin production, and promotes skin growth and new blood vessel formation.

PRP and PRF are isolated from a small amount of your blood and injected into target areas to address skin aging or hair loss. The main difference is the speed at which each functions. PRP releases growth factors immediately, delivering rapid results. PRF, on the other hand, releases growth factors gradually, ensuring you enjoy long-lasting benefits.

What Can PRP or PRF Injections Do for You?

Does it hurt to get PRP and PRF injections?

PRP and PRF injections involve two steps. First your clinician will draw a vial of blood from your vein. The pain level is the same as a regular blood draw. The vial of blood is spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich components, which is then injected back to your under the skin or scalp. Because we use very small needles for this injection, the pain level is minimal and may be described as pinpricks. Some sensation of swelling, pressure, and dull ache at the injection site is common for a few days afterward, as the platelets induce a series of chemical and cellular reactions and your body's natural regenerative process starts to work. PRP and PRF can also be applied superficially during skin rejuvenation procedures with RF microneedling or lasers. Topical numbing cream can be used to maximize comfort during application.
