Starting in Your 20s: Preventive Aesthetic Medicine

young woman taking of her face with preventive aesthetic medicine

Last week, I had a client coming in for laser hair reduction. A young woman in her mid 20s, and laser hair reduction is undoubtedly the most popular procedure for clients her age – getting tired of shaving, ingrown hairs and razor burns, the pain of waxing, they seek a more permanent solution. We at Eocene are more than happy to support her in achieving long-lasting smooth skin, so we get the laser firing. (We do have the state-of-art laser hair reduction machine, btw, read more about our technology here.)

As a physician engaged in aesthetic practices, I can’t help but assess my patient holistically, the tone, texture, brightness of her skin, volume of the underlying soft tissue, and movements of her facial muscles. I ask if she has any concerns about her skin and if she’s ever considered other aesthetic treatments. The answer is a resounding no, “I’m too young for that.”

So she says, and I want to say, girl, you are not too young for that.

This article is for all women in their 20s and 30s. Let’s talk about what is that (=preventive aesthetic medicine), and why you should start now.

“When you’re young, you don’t really believe you’ll ever be anything other than young.”

Meg Wolitzer, The uncoupling: a novel

What is preventive aesthetic medicine?

For decades, the aesthetics industry focused primarily on reactive “anti-aging” – using volume-heavy fillers to correct deep lines and lift sagging skin. The problem with this approach is that when you try to reverse or mask the damage has already occurred, you get an artificial, over-corrected look.

At Eocene, we advocate for a different approach: preventive aesthetics medicine.

Think of your skin as a biological asset. Much like a financial portfolio, skin health is best managed through consistent, early investment rather than trying to recoup the structural losses later in life.

We all know that thanks to compounding interest, even a little bit of savings set aside each month can turn into significant financial yields years later. Investing in your skin is the same way.

Preventive aesthetic medicine helps you minimize the damage from the elements, preserve the integrity of your skin, and promote regeneration to build healthy tissue.

What are the components of preventive aesthetic medicine?

When it comes to skin health, we want to think about four pillars to preventive aesthetic medicine: protection from the harmful effects of UV light, prevention of dynamic wrinkles, collagen banking, and enhanced skin turnover and regeneration.

1. Protection from UV light

We can’t say enough about UV protection. As much as we love the warmth and vitamin D generating powers of the sun, we need to remember that sunlight is also the root cause of photoaging. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or above worn everyday is the most effective way to stop the damage before it begins. There are a myriad of SPFs out there, with different textures, tints, and thickness, we can help you find one that suits your skin so you will keep using it.

2. Prevention of dynamic wrinkles

A common misconception is that Neuromodulators (like Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify) are reserved for “fixing” deep, etched-in wrinkles. However, it’s often too late when wrinkles are already etched in. In a preventative model, neuromodulators function as a “brake” to stop the wrinkles before they form.

Repetitive muscle contractions – frowning, squinting, and furrowing – eventually etch lines into the skin that become visible even when the face is at rest. By proactively using low-dose neuromodulators, we “train” these muscles to relax.

The low dose neuromodulators won’t give you a “frozen” or expressionless appearance. We’re just intentionally preventing dynamic lines from transitioning into permanent, static creases.

3. Collagen banking

Collagen is the scaffolding of your skin. Starting in our mid-20s, our natural collagen production begins to decline, leading to a subtle loss of density and elasticity.

To “bank” collagen, we utilize Biostimulatory Injectables (such as PLLA or CaHA). These agents act as biological signals, encouraging your own cells to synthesize fresh, resilient collagen. They do not merely “fill” space; they actively improve the tissue quality from the inside out, creating a foundation that is firmer, smoother, and more naturally vibrant.

If biostimulators provide the signal to build, RF Microneedling acts as the catalyst. This procedure utilizes controlled, microscopic thermal energy to create micro-channels in the dermis. RF Microneedling triggers neocollagenesis (medical word for “production of new collagen”) resulting in a thickened, more resilient dermal layer.

The microchannels also serve as conduits to deliver targeted, medical-grade topicals such as exosomes, allowing us to deliver restorative ingredients exactly where they are needed most.

4. Skin turnover and regeneration

Professional treatments are highly effective, but they are most successful when supported by a rigorous daily regimen. This is where your medical-grade skincare comes in.

Build a daily routine with purposeful products that give your skin the nutrients it needs to repair and regenerate. Medical-grade skincare is not about vanity; it is about maintaining the biological integrity of the skin barrier.

Some of the ingredients in the skincare products we recommend to our clients include retinoids, vitamin C, and ceramide. Choice of ingredients is customized to your individual skin type and overall skin health needs. Talk with a qualified medical aesthetics professional before trying skincare products on your own.

Evidence-Based Skincare Essentials

The daily tools to maximize your skin longevity.

  • Broad-Spectrum SPF: The non-negotiable tool for longevity. Protect the collagen you are working so hard to bank.
  • Retinoids: Essential for regulating cellular turnover and maintaining dermal thickness.
  • Antioxidants (Vitamin C): Provide a daily shield against free-radical damage and oxidative stress.
  • Ceramide-Rich Moisturizers: Supports the skin barrier, keeping the tissue hydrated and resilient post-treatment.

What are the benefits of preventive aesthetic medicine?

By prioritizing skin health in your 20s and 30s, you are not just masking the signs of time. You are building a foundation that will support your aesthetic harmony for decades to come.

You are preventing damage from sunlight and repeated muscle movements, increasing your structural reserve of collagen and elastin, and allowing your skin to bounce back from stress and injury.

Traditional, reactive aesthetics is all about attempting to erase the signs of aging. With preventive aesthetics, we can actually slow down aging.

Aesthetic medicine is a long-term collaboration. By starting early with regenerative treatments and rigorous, evidence-based skincare, you are building a longevity bridge that protects your natural beauty for decades.

What to do in your 20s and 30s

A proactive timeline for building your aesthetic foundation.

In Your 20s: The Maintenance Phase

  • Focus: Prevention and barrier protection.
  • Protocol: Consistent medical-grade skincare (SPF + Retinoids), regular professional facials, and initiating “baby” neuromodulators to soften dynamic expressions.

In Your 30s: The Banking Phase

  • Focus: Structural reinforcement and collagen preservation.
  • Protocol: Introduce biostimulatory treatments and RF microneedling to stimulate deep-dermal remodeling and offset the early decline in natural collagen production.
